Moïse Jean Charles’ Controversial Visit to the U.S. Embassy
Moïse Jean Charles’ recent visit to the U.S. Embassy on July 2nd to celebrate U.S. Independence Day sparked significant controversy among his peers and adversaries. His past rants against the U.S., driving major crowds in front of the U.S. Embassy to protest against the wrongdoing by the United States towards Haiti, are well known. We must acknowledge that members of his political party are duly represented as Council member and other positions of the current government, Whether or not, he should have rebuked the invitation as part of the current government was a personal choice.
Serious doubts are emerging within the political party Pitit Dessalines about Moïse Jean Charles’ latest engagement in the current administration, knowing particularly that there’s no significant changes can be derived from them. He has not yet address the nation since the beginning of the Council formation.
Now, a vast majority of Haitians who believed in Moïse Jean Charles’ rhetorical speeches against the United States felt betrayed by seeing him in the U.S. Embassy yard in Haiti. A picture taken by Frantz Duval from “The Nouvelliste” has circulated widely.
In conclusion, his friends and foes should not rush to judge him so harshly just because he accepted an invitation to celebrate U.S. independence at the same embassy he fought so hard against. It was just a celebration that we all should acknowledge and participate when a nation rises to freedom and power.
